Sean Kirk, Pivot Legal’s founder, assists his business clients with assessing their legal options and executing their legal objectives. For over 20 years, Sean has represented clients in a wide range of industries, by pursuing, and defending, their business interests in state and federal courts across the country. Leveraging his experience both in private practice and as in-house litigation counsel for a global Fortune 1000/S&P 500 company, he has developed a particular focus on contract disputes, creditor rights, and serving as outside general counsel for a variety of businesses that need practicable legal advice at cost-efficient rates.
Born and raised in Kennesaw, GA, by a factory worker and an elementary school educator, Sean learned early on the value of hard work in order to achieve one’s goals. After graduating from the University of Georgia as a first-generation college graduate, he then attended the University of Tennessee College of Law. Upon graduation, he moved to Nashville and began building a successful commercial business litigation practice.
After a decade as partner and equity owner at a leading Nashville law firm, a long-standing client invited him to become in-house legal counsel to handle its global disputes. In that role, Sean worked hand-in-hand with all levels of employees—from junior customer service representatives to C-Suite executives—across lines of business involved in dozens of industries, in managing business disputes and developing best practices to assess and mitigate present and future risk that made both business and legal sense.
In 2025, Sean started Pivot Legal to fill a critical gap of seasoned business litigation attorneys in the Nashville area willing to provide legal assistance to companies in a cost-efficient manner.
Sean’s clients and colleagues have called him a “bulldog” in the courtroom and have noted his approachability, flexibility and willingness to go above and beyond. His clients have described him as “the best lawyer that a business could hope to partner with.” They’ve also called him a “consummate team player,” a “valued partner and advisor,” and someone who is “creative and proactive” in seeking solutions that mitigate legal risk while supporting business goals.
Sean has been nominated by his peers and clients multiple times as “Best of the Bar” in both litigation and financial services. He also has achieved the highest peer rating standard for an attorney in the legal profession, given to attorneys who rank at the highest level of professional excellence for their legal expertise, communication skills and ethical standards by their peers.
Sean has served as a guest lecturer and panelist on a variety of legal and business topics for regional and state-specific trade groups. Business and trade group journals have looked to him to provide his legal perspective on a variety of topics. He serves on the Continuing Legal Education faculty for the Tennessee Bar Association and the Nashville Bar Association. He has regularly presented in-house seminars and workshops for his clients, their Boards of Director, and to business leaders across Tennessee.
Sean also believes a lawyer’s role includes acting as a community connector. He has been recognized by the Tennessee Supreme Court several times over for his pro bono services to those who cannot afford legal costs. He has served on the boards of several nonprofits in the greater Nashville area, with a particular focus on local organizations serving families and children in crisis situations. Sean also believes strongly in fostering leadership opportunities in his community, serving as a member of the Nashville Young Leaders Council, Nashville Emerging Leaders, and the Nashville Chamber of Commerce Small Business Council.
When Sean isn’t lawyering (and, even when he is), he is a proud, doting dad to his daughter, with his primary goal each day to make her laugh with unrequited joy. He is a die-hard Atlanta Braves and Georgia Bulldogs fan. He also enjoys music, traveling and reading fiction short stories and music-related biographies and essay collections. On several occasions, Sean has been told that his true calling may involve some combination of assembling the perfect playlist, dominating at pop culture trivia, and singing with the vigor of Jack Black.
